What the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 Need to Win Me Back from Android

New iPhone 5 Prototypes Reportedly Pack NFC

We pretty much expect that the iPhone 5 will come with NFC support at this point, specifically because Apple’s PassBook application serves as a perfect catalyst to blow mobile payments out of the water. 9to5Mac says it has dug deeper into the hardware code from Apple’s iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2 prototypes and thinks it has discovered NFC controllers. The site also says it appears that the NFC controllers are directly connected to the phone’s power management unit. If true, we believe it is, this means Apple probably has partnerships in place that will allow customers to store credit and debit card information on their phone, which would allow them to place purchases using their iPhone 5 in a similar fashion to how users “tap-and-go” with Google Wallet-enabled devices.

Windows 8 release date set for “late October”

Microsoft has finally confirmed that Windows 8 is on course for a launch this October. The date won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been following the development of the OS, as it’s been widely expected that the but it has been made official at last. It will be almost exactly three years since its predecessor, Windows 7, hit the shelves, and two decades since the breakthrough Windows for Workgroups 3.1.

Speaking at the company’s Worldwide Partner Conference last night, VP Rami Teller explaining that the Release To Manufacturing (RTM) version of the operating system will be made available during the first week of August. The RTM is equivalent to gaming ‘gold’ code, and its early release will give companies the chance to prepare systems running Windows 8 before launch date. Traditionally the RTM is also usually released to TechNet subscribers to try out for 90 days too.

Unless you fancy one of the new fangled touchscreen-o-matic tablet-cum-laptops that will be released with the operating system, like the Lenovo Yoga, don’t let this news put you off upgrading. Microsoft has already released details of a scheme through which any new Windows 7 PC can be upgraded for £15. What’s more, if you’re running the Windows 8 Preview version, you’ll be able to upgrade to the full release for the same price.

It’s not too much of a leap to assume that it means Microsoft’s own Surface tablets will also be available from the same date.

Defense Grid 2 launches Kickstarter, includes Radeon HD 6870 for $325-tier backers

Add Defense Grid: the Awakening developers Hidden Path to the pile of game creators diving into the scrum for a piece of the Kickstarter pie. They’re looking to raise a full million as a stretch goal, but have milestones at every quarter-mil that will allow them to deliver at least part of the DG2 experience. They’ve also partnered with AMD to give away up to 565 Radeon HD graphics cards to contributors above the $225 line, which is certainly a unique incentive for PC gamers.

At the $250 level, there are 265 HD 6770s available, which are going for about $125 on newegg at the moment. Bump up to the $325 tier, and you could own one of 300 HD 6870s, which are about $180 on their own. Other reward tiers include Razer Naga Hex gaming mice, and the usual t-shirts and unique physical editions we’ve come to expect.

This particular fundraiser is tiered. If it can raise $250,000, Hidden Path will release a new, 8 level expansion for Defense Grid: The Awakening. At $500,000, they build a new engine, remaster all of the old levels in it, and add multiplayer support. $750,000 will get us a level editor, release on more platforms (Mac, Linux, etc.), and some more multiplayer features. $1 million is the final goal, allowing the development of a full sequel with a new campaign, new aliens, and new towers.

There are still 34 days left to back this one, but some of the tiers have limited quantity “early bird” bonuses, that get you more stuff for less money. So if you want the best value, you may want to back sooner rather than later.

Top Gun: Hard Lock

Publisher: 505 Games Release: 2012 Merely a typo away from the original film’s subtext, Top Gun: Hard Lock takes the hit movie’s bombastic, homoerotic airborne combat and turns it into a bombastic, presumably homoerotic game. To get a pretty good idea of exactly what it’s going to be like, play Tom Clancy’s HAWX, Afterburner or Crimson Skies with Highway to the Danger Zone playing on your iPod.

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4

Publisher: Ubisoft Release: Summer It’s a team-based shooter, again, but rather than updating to a modern combat scenario, this new Brothers in Arms sees a gang of armed-to-the-teeth Yank soldiers take on those pesky Nazis. The demo we saw involved jetpacks and demented violence. It recalls Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, with plenty of gore and Nazi-branding. Like a 1940s version of Bulletstorm.

Guild Wars 2′s final beta weekend unlocks two never-before-playable races

The weekend of July 20th will play host to Guild Wars 2′s final beta weekend, just a touch over a month before its highly-anticipated August 28th ship-date. New to this pre-release swan song will be the ability to finally play as Tyria’s two previously locked races: the Asura and the Sylvari. Fans of steampunk gnomes and photosynthetic, tree-hugging elf people rejoice! The techmage Asura will get to check out the starter quests in their home province of Metricia, which includes the capital city of Rata Sum. The Sylvari will get to explore the Grove, an appropriately foliated capital that isn’t so much a city as it is a whole bunch of trees with stuff in them. These newcomers will join the existing humans, norn, and charr from previous betas to round out GW2′s quintet of playable races. Personally, I don’t see the point of including any other races in a game that lets you be giant, Viking werebears. But that’s just me. Which of the new races are you most interested in trying out?
