New iPhone 5 Prototypes Reportedly Pack NFC
We pretty much expect that the iPhone 5 will come with NFC support at this point, specifically because Apple’s PassBook application serves as a perfect catalyst to blow mobile payments out of the water. 9to5Mac says it has dug deeper into the hardware code from Apple’s iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2 prototypes and thinks it has discovered NFC controllers. The site also says it appears that the NFC controllers are directly connected to the phone’s power management unit. If true, we believe it is, this means Apple probably has partnerships in place that will allow customers to store credit and debit card information on their phone, which would allow them to place purchases using their iPhone 5 in a similar fashion to how users “tap-and-go” with Google Wallet-enabled devices.
